Organic forms - making a liquid light
Glass is gathered out of the furnace at 1100 c onto a blowing iron. This soft material is then blown and shaped using tools and calipers. Due to the centrifugal motion of the blowing irons the easiest forms to make are always symmetrical, usually spherical or cylindrical. In order to make a more organic form, manufacturers would traditionally use wooden or metal moulds. However, this process can make the glass look rigid, and often has seams that show where the hot glass has been pressed into submission.
In order to keep the beautiful fluid quality of molten glass, our Liquid Lights use a more inventive process. A sphere is blown to size and then rolled over textured stones. The outside skin of the glass cools instantly when contacting a cold surface and creates a unique undulating form.
