The recently renewed Van der Valk Hotel Volendam exemplifies how contemporary hospitality interiors can be both refined and inviting. Central to the transformation was Valk Design, the Van der Valk Group’s in-house design studio, which developed the overall concept for the hotel’s public spaces.
Valk Design is known for shaping a consistent yet adaptable design language across numerous Van der Valk hotels in the Netherlands and beyond. Their work typically blends contemporary elegance with comfort-driven hospitality, favouring rich material palettes, tactile finishes, and layered lighting to create spaces that feel luxurious without becoming formal or intimidating.

At Hotel Volendam, this approach is evident in the careful coordination of materials, colours, and spatial layouts. Each element was selected to support a seamless guest journey, resulting in interiors that feel calm, cohesive, and welcoming while maintaining a modern identity. Strong, saturated colours are used strategically to create visual impact and guide the guest experience without overwhelming the spaces. Rather than applying bright tones uniformly, Valk Design integrates pops of bold colour in key areas, such as upholstery or lighting accents, to add energy and personality.
Particular attention was given to the dining areas, where atmosphere is essential. Here, lighting was conceived as an architectural and experiential tool rather than a purely functional element, playing a key role in defining the mood of the space.
Our Vintage Light fixtures introduce warmth and subtle colour, softly diffusing light to enhance ambience while accentuating the textures and finishes specified by Valk Design. Their sculptural presence adds depth and individuality, aligning with Valk Design’s contemporary aesthetic and reinforcing the hotel’s identity as a thoughtful, design-led destination.
